How we research & rank earbuds

Transparency is the whole point. Here's exactly how a pair of earbuds earns — or loses — a spot on our list.

A recommendation is only as trustworthy as the process behind it. We document ours in full so you can judge the work for yourself — and so you know what our rankings do and don't represent.

1. We start with the market, not a shortlist

Before ranking anything, we build a working list of every notable wireless earbud in the price range we're covering — currently 20+ models under $100, refreshed as new pairs launch. That includes major brands (Sony, Samsung, Apple, Anker/Soundcore, Jabra) and the strong value challengers (EarFun, TOZO, 1More) that often outperform their price.

2. We gather evidence from multiple independent sources

For each model we compile and cross-check:

Where a number comes from matters. When we cite a figure that's a manufacturer claim rather than an independent measurement — battery life and "noise reduction percentage" are the usual culprits — we flag it as such. Lab figures are best-case; we tell you what to expect in real life.

3. We weigh what actually affects daily use

Specs don't get equal weight, because they don't matter equally. Our ranking emphasizes the factors that most shape long-term satisfaction:

CriterionWhy it's weighted heavily
Sound quality & tuningThe core job; evaluated for balance, not just bass.
Noise cancellationReal-world effectiveness, not headline percentages.
Comfort & fitThe most overlooked spec and the top reason buds go unused.
Battery lifePer-charge with ANC on — the number you actually live with.
ValuePerformance relative to price, the heart of a budget list.
ConnectivityMultipoint, stable Bluetooth, low-latency where relevant.

4. We define who each pair is for

No single pair wins for everyone. An open-ear runner's earbud and a noise-isolating commuter's earbud are answering different questions. That's why every entry on our rankings page states both who a product is right for and where it falls short.

5. We revisit and update

Prices shift, firmware improves, and new models launch constantly. We date every ranking, re-check picks as the market moves, and revise placements when the evidence changes. An "updated" date on a page reflects a genuine review of its contents.

Our independence

EarBud Insider is reader-funded through affiliate commissions, which we disclose on every page that contains them. We do not accept payment to feature, rank, or rate a product more favorably, and affiliate relationships never influence placement. If that ever changed, we would tell you plainly. Full details are in our Terms & Disclosures.
